Why Does My Dog Keep Licking Their Paws? Common Causes and Allergy Treatments

Why Is My Dog Licking Their Paws?

Dogs may lick the tops of their paws, chew around their paw pads, or focus intensely on one specific foot. In many cases, excessive paw licking is associated with allergies and itchy skin.

Dogs experiencing allergies may also show other symptoms, including:

• Scratching their ears
• Rubbing their face
• Licking or chewing their belly
• Chewing at their sides
• Red, inflamed skin
• Frequent ear infections

Because itching in dogs can affect multiple areas of the body, paw licking is often just one sign of a larger allergy problem.

 

What Causes Allergies in Dogs?

Why Are My Dog’s Paws Turning Brown or Red?

Many owners of white or light-colored dogs notice that their pet’s feet gradually become brown or reddish-brown.

This discoloration occurs because your dog’s saliva contains pigments and enzymes that stain the fur over time. Repeated licking causes these stains to build up, resulting in the brown coloring commonly seen around the paws.

Why Doesn’t Benadryl Stop My Dog’s Paw Licking?

Many pet owners try over-the-counter allergy medications such as Benadryl®, Zyrtec®, or Claritin® to relieve their dog’s itching. While these medications can be effective for people, they often do not work well in dogs.

Why? Human allergies are largely caused by the release of histamine in the body. In dogs, however, allergy pathways are more complex and are not primarily driven by histamine release. As a result, antihistamines frequently provide little to no relief for itchy pets.

The good news is that several effective treatments are available to help reduce itching and improve your dog’s quality of life.

Depending on your pet’s needs, treatment options may include:

• Monoclonal antibody therapy
• Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors

When Should I Take My Dog to the Vet for Paw Licking?
